Willets Point transformation announced for Queens, bringing affordable housing, privately financed soccer stadium and more

Housing is the Goal! On November 16th, Related, a partner in Queens Development Group, announced the transformation of Willets Point into a thriving neighborhood—anchored by 2,500 affordable housing units: the largest 100% affordable, new construction housing development in New York City in 40 years.

Queens Development Group, a joint venture of Related Companies and Sterling Equities, will also be working alongside New York City Football Club to introduce NYC's first soccer-specific stadium—creating a generational investment in the World’s Borough that will bring over $6 billion in economic impact and nearly 16,000 jobs.

The significant infrastructure investment for this project will include additional environmental cleanup—supplementing the ongoing remediation work—as well as installation of new storm and sanitary sewers, reconstruction of streets, and improvements to the existing streetscape.

Related and Hudson close on Riverwalk 9, the final building in Roosevelt Island's Riverwalk neighborhood

On November 14th, Related Companies and partner The Hudson Companies announced the closing of construction financing for Riverwalk 9, which will be the ninth and last building part of the Riverwalk neighborhood in Roosevelt Island. Riverwalk 9 will introduce 104 workforce residences reserved for Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center employees, 254 market rate residences and office space for the Roosevelt Island Operating Corporation (RIOC). A common space between the eight and ninth Riverwalk buildings will contain a dog run, grill space and acres of public, open space that the community can benefit from. Once completed, the Riverwalk complex will consist of nine buildings offering 2,000 condominium and rental apartments—40 percent of which are affordable—hundreds of workforce residences, retail, public parks, daycare facilities and ballfields. Related is proud to introduce much-needed affordable housing to New York City, as well as to positively impact the residents of Roosevelt Island.

Children's art program offered at Harriet Tubman Building in Far Rockaway

This October, affordable development The Harriet Tubman Building teamed up with Related art partner Sugarlift to launch engaging art workshops for young residents. Nonprofit WIN, Sugarlift and the New York-based artist duo Chiaozza led the first event, where children created collages that were inspired by the imaginative style of their playroom's mural and sculpture, which Sugarlift commissioned Chiaozza to create custom for The Harriet Tubman Building. After the workshop, the children's artwork will be framed and exhibited for their community to appreciate.

Southern Hills affordable residence to receive transformational renovations and new playground

On September 28th, The Related Affordable Foundation, Related Midwest and Related Management Company announced that affordable residence Southern Hills will undergo major renovations, including renovations to individual residences and common areas. At a community event celebrating the renovations, Related and KABOOM! unveiled plans to build a kid-designed playground at Southern Hills that will offer families a safe and dynamic place to play. The new playspace will be a collaborative effort with Southern Hills residents, drawing upon children's sketches from an earlier Design Day event to inspire its design and better serve the community.

We started exclusively as an affordable housing developer in 1972, and today, we are one of the largest developers and preservationists of affordable and workforce housing in the country. Currently, we own and manage 55,000 affordable and workforce housing apartment homes and we are proud to have never converted a single unit of affordable housing to market rate.

This fall, Related Affordable Foundation and nonprofit KABOOM! celebrated the creation of a kid-designed playspace at Southern Hills, which provides an active, social and safe place for kids to have fun and express themselves.

Together with LR Contracting Company and Bowa Construction, Related Midwest broke ground on 900 Randolph in Chicago on November 4th. When completed, 900 Randolph will introduce 300 residences to the Fulton Market neighborhood—with 20 percent to be designated as affordable.

Co-developed by Related Northwest and non-profit Central City Concern, Cedar Commons has opened in East Portland, offering permanently-supportive housing to some of the most vulnerable local residents. Central City Concern will also provide residents with on-site services such as mental health services and employment support and training.

The city officially broke ground on the environmental cleanup efforts needed for the Willets Point redevelopment in Queens. The project is being undertaken by a pair of developers called Queens Development Group, which includes Related Companies and Sterling Equities.
